Rebuilding Trust Between CEO & BoD

Nonprofit Client- Leadership Development - Case Study

Background

The client had recently conducted an internal assessment to evaluate the alignment between its Board of Directors and the executive leadership, led by a long-standing CEO. The assessment revealed a significant trust deficit between the Board and the CEO, much to the CEO’s surprise. This gap was impacting decision-making efficiency and inhibiting transparent, collaborative discussions on strategic direction.

  • Lack of strategic execution

Benefits

  • Higher trust and alignment
  • Greater openness and candor
  • Measurable performance improvement

Intervention

CMP facilitated a six-month team coaching program for the CEO and Board. The program included:

  • Trust-Building Sessions Focused on improving openness, transparency, and empathy between the CEO and Board. Using assessments to identify key trust barriers, the sessions enabled participants to address individual expectations and the significance of psychological safety in board interactions.
  • Structured Feedback Mechanism To encourage ongoing openness, CMP helped the team design a structured feedback system, allowing Board members to provide real-time input in a formal yet constructive setting. This included monthly dashboard reporting changes from the CEO to the BoD updating them on key operational changes and future strategic shifts.
  • Commitment to Shared Values and Goals Through a series of alignment sessions, the team articulated shared objectives, reinforcing their mutual dedication to the company's mission.

Outcome

By the end of the six-month team coaching program the client found improvement in trust, collaboration, and communication:

  • Enhanced Communication and Transparency Proactive, clear, and transparent messaging in a structured format leading to increased confidence and buy-in from all parties.
  • Increased Psychological Safety - BoD reported feeling safer to express concerns and challenge ideas and the CEO felt richer decision-making resulted from their new communication.
  • Renewed Commitment to Strategic Goals - Improved trust and collaboration lead to more strategic, attainable outcomes for the staff and organization through unified efforts and support.
