Position: Vice President, Communications and Marketing

Note: There are a total of forty (40) employees, within the Communications and Marketing Organization.

General Role Summary

Under general direction of the Executive Vice President, Administration & Diversity, the Vice President, Communications and Marketing is responsible for elevating the reputation of DFW Airport through communications, marketing, outreach, engagement and collaboration in support DFW Airport’s Strategic Plan. This is a very visible, key and critical leadership role within the DFW organization. The successful candidate must be a very seasoned/mature and collaborative executive with extensive larger company/Communications/PR/Marketing executive level experience, who can lead and operate well at both tactical and strategic levels.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops and updates department’s strategic plan to support key DFW Airport initiatives.
  • Promotes public awareness of the competitive advantages of DFW Airport as a regional, national, and international transportation facility.
  • Develops effective working relationships with CEO, executives, and senior staff to support the achievement of business goals.
  • Creates strategic programs and processes and inspire staff to execute results.
  • Manages emerging issues to minimize the potential negative impact on DFW Airport’s image.
  • Informs and influences DFW Airport’s employees, customers and stakeholders through media relations, internal communications, social and digital media, marketing, issues management, and crisis response.
  • Generates broad and positive awareness of air service, products and services through paid, owned and earned channels.
  • Researches, prepares and provides logistics management for presentations and speeches for the Chief Executive Officer and other members of the Executive Staff.
  • Develops consistent internal messaging utilizing various channels to communicate DFW Airport’s strategic plan and business goals to enhance employee commitment and engagement.
  • Creates effective content and internal communications campaigns that build awareness, desire, knowledge and reinforces DFW Airport’s Beliefs.
  • Ensures DFW Airport’s crisis communication plan is always updated and current.
  • Develops and executes marketing strategies for Airport priorities and revenue generating programs.
  • Responds to emergency and crisis situations which include: after-hour and weekend representation at DFW Airport’s Emergency Operations Center, conference calls and overall business support.
  • Directs and supports the Board of Directors process and communications, including the monthly Board cycle and associated activities.
  • Manages effective Owner City relationships and interfaces to secure appropriate approvals required.
  • Develops and implements community engagement programs, to broaden and enhance key stakeholder’s advocacy and support through outreach, engagement and employee involvement while ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with business partners such as chambers of commerce, business advocacy groups, CVBs, regulatory agencies and collaborates on messaging with airlines as necessary.
  • Manages DFW Airport’s sponsorships and memberships to leverage impactful community relations.
  • Attends social and civic functions on behalf of the airport which include evening and weekend functions; provides airport tours for visiting VIPs, community organizations and other stakeholders.
  • Directs the development and administration of the department budget.
  • Interviews, selects, trains, manages and evaluates staff.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism, liberal arts, or a related field.
  • Ten (10) years of leadership experience in corporate communications, public relations, or print or broadcast media.
  • Seven (7) years of executive leadership experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the above.
  • Possession of a valid class C driver’s license.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of corporate communications, community affairs, marketing and business administration.
  • Knowledge of current print and broadcast media production equipment, materials, standards, and methods.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Community/PR/Marketing business.
  • Strong business acumen and leadership skills to successfully assess, develop and mentor talent within the Communications and Marketing organization.
  • A stellar reputation within the corporate community affairs/public relations sector that brings a well-respected creativity, innovativeness and gravitas into the role.
  • A seasoned leader that sets high expectations for this role and the staff reporting to it.
  • Experience working within a “big churn” highly utilized Communications and Marketing environment, preferably within a Fortune 500 organization.
  • An inspirational leader that works creatively and collaboratively. Is comfortable with change and ambiguity and can “quickly hit the ground running”.
  • High degree of Self-Awareness, Emotional Intelligence, Political Savvy, Critical Thinking, Influencing and Communications Skills.
  • Capable of providing an energetic and creative approach to work. Ability to resolve conflict and drive successful execution.
  • Ability to successfully execute the Community/PR/Marketing business.
  • Ability to quickly establish credibility and be viewed as a collaborative partner.
  • Ability to communicate big-picture concepts, reduce inefficient work-flow, while acting strategically and making accurate proactive decisions.
  • Ability to apply a global business perspective to communications, marketing and public affairs.
  • Ability to prepare and present critical strategic internal and external communications.
  • Ability and experience with addressing difficult public relations issues as they arise and produce positive solutions for the board.
  • Ability to provide strategic public relations consultation in partnership with DFW Airport and the Owner Cities.
  • Ability to develop key programs that supports the communications and marketing long term strategies.
  • Ability to present a commanding and credible public presence when making speeches and representing the board.
  • Ability to work in a very fast paced environment, with unpredictable hours, under tight deadlines and motivate others to do so.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with board employees, the public, and the press.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with people inside and outside the organization.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize competing interests from multiple clients.

Special Requirement

Must obtain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Airport Identification/Access Badge (badge) in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements in Chapter 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 1500 et al., and DFW Airport’s Airport Security Program within thirty (30) days from date of employment and maintain qualification for a SIDA badge upon each badge renewal.

Desirable Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Communications, Public Affairs, Law, or Government.
  • Experience in more than one role related to communications, marketing or public relations
  • Experience in public policy disciplines.
  • Experience with Fortune 500 companies.
  • Airport or aviation industry experience.
  • PRSA Certification of other relevant Public Relations certifications.
